![]() Olympics: One of the ways that the Ancient Greek culture is seen in the modern world is by the Olympics. The first Olympics were held in Olympia in 776 BC. Every four years countries would gather together and compete in different athletic events. This lasted for 1200 years until the games were abolished by Theodosius I in 393 AD. The games were re-established in 1896 and have been a worldwide ritual ever since. ![]() Alphabet: The Greeks were the first to use an alphabet. The word "alphabet" even comes from the first two letters in the Greek alphabet: alpha and beta. The Greek alphabet has 24 letters and the English alphabet has letters that originate from the Greeks; A,B,E, and O. |

![]() Architecture: Modern architecture has roots from the Ancient Greeks, too. The pillars on famous buildings, such as the White House and the Nation's Capital building, resemble the pillars that are found on the Temple of Zues, Temple of Poseidon and Temple of Apollo Epicurius. ![]() Libraries: The first library is the Library of Alexandria. Even though the city was located in Egypt, they were considered to be Greeks because they surrendered to Alexanders rule the Macedonians started to spread the word of the Greeks. Great discoveries happened in libraries such as when Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth. |
![]() Mythology: The Greeks used myths to explain things, but today we still read them as a form of entertainment. The most famous myths include: Hercules, Peruses and Theseus. The myths have been altered so that movies and books could be made out of them examples of these are Disney's: Hercules and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. ![]() Lighthouses: The first lighthouse was located in the great city of Alexandria. The lighthouse was the second tallest structure of its day falling behind theGreat Pyramid of Giza . The lighthouse's signal worked through fire and smoke. The lighthouse was destroyed because of earthquakes, but it set a blueprint for all future lighthouses. |
